KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After falling in the first contest, the University of Saint Mary softball team rallied back from a three-run deficit in game two of a doubleheader against – and Briar Cliff University, but came up short in the end. The Spires lost both games by scores of 8-0 and 6-4.
Saint Mary is now at 1-5 overall on the season.
GAME 1
Saint Mary was blanked in the first contest that lasted just five innings. Briar Cliff scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Chargers then scored five runs in the fourth frame. Saint Mary had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth with runners on second and third base, but were unable to capitalize. Briar Cliff would go on to win 8-0.
GAME 2
After Briar Cliff opened the game with a 2-0 lead, the Spires connected in the bottom of the first inning. Hailey Reece would hit a single then travel around to third base. She then scored on a ground ball from Alexis Solis to give the team their first run of the game. The Chargers added another two runs in the second inning to lead 4-1.
Both teams would go scoreless in the next three innings as Sierra Gerdts stepped in for Maria Howard in the circle and struck out four batters in 5.1 innings. Saint Mary would put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four to bring some life to the squad. Solis and Reghan Ross hit back-to-back doubles before Gerdts knocked both of them in on a single. Megan Johnson then stepped up to the plate and earned a double to score Gerdts – tying the game at four.
Saint Mary got the first two outs of the seventh inning over the Chargers, but BCU would put together some hits and added two runs in the frame. Saint Mary was able to load the bases in the bottom half, but the Chargers escaped the jam to end the game.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Solis had a team high three hits.
- The Spires hit three doubles in the sixth inning as part of their rally.
- Gerdts led the Spires with two RBI on the day.

Saint Mary travels to Conway, Ark. on Friday and Saturday to compete in the CBC Tournament. The Spires will play (3) Oklahoma City and Lyon College on Friday, before taking on Central Methodist and (21) LSU-Shreveport on Saturday.
