WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team fell 91-57 to Friends University on Wednesday night on the road inside Garvey Center. It was an uncharacteristic night for the offense as only two Spires scored in double-digits.
The Spires are now 4-20 overall and 4-16 KCAC.
The Falcons quickly jumped out to a 12-3 lead, but then Nese Selepeo found Kaylie Simonds behind the arc to give the Spires a little spark. Selepeo then hit a 1-of-2 free-throws that was immediately followed by a three-pointer made by Macy Walker to make it a one possession game with 4:24 left in the first quarter. Friends retaliated with a 10-1 run to end the quarter. Saint Mary struggled in the second quarter as they went 2-for-17 from the field and 0-for-5 from the three-point line. The Falcons would carry a 44-15 lead into halftime.
Simonds opened the second half with a made free-throw in hopes to ignite a comeback. Walker and Katie Robinson traded baskets in the early minutes of the third quarter, but Friends would answer after every bucket from Saint Mary. With 4:37 left in the third, Danielle Cassady made her first points of the game as the Junior point guard struggled to score throughout the night. In the opening minutes of the final quarter, Bridget Cassidy knocked down back-to-back three-points with assists from Robinson and Walker in her second game back after battling multiple injuries, which caused her to miss a big chunk of the season. The Spires had a better shooting half as they shot 30% from the field, but the Falcons did not let up and pulled away for the win.
Walker led the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Corle finished with 10 points. Robinson had seven points and six rebounds. Selepeo, Simonds, and Cassidy each finished with six points.
