KANSAS CITY, Kan. – With a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning, Damian Lomeli led things off with a double before Bryan Fuentes hit a deep ball into right-center field for a base hit to seal a 4-3 win over a tough Ottawa University team Tuesday afternoon at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
Saint Mary is now 3-16 overall and 2-6 in the KCAC on the season.
It was a story of two teams trading punches throughout the contest. Saint Mary struck first after Jarett Goss scored on a ground out from Gilbert Rondon. After Ottawa tied the score in the second inning the Spires gained a 2-1 lead when Alex Guevara-Moya scored on an RBI groundout by Daunte Freeman.
Both teams would go scoreless in the next two frames. In the sixth inning each team scored a run as the Spires led 3-2. The Braves found a way to tie the score in the seventh inning after a baserunner scored on a passed ball. Yanthony Navarro was able to hold the fort on the mound the entire game and bring the Spires to the plate in the ninth. Lomeli led the inning off with a double to right field and Steele Sadler would pinch run for him at second base. Fuentes later stepped up to the plate with one out and hit a long shot to right that landed in the outfield, making it easy for Sadler to score from second base.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Rondon led the Spires with two RBI.
- Navarro pitched a complete game giving up one earned run and striking out eight batters.
- Fuentes and Freeman each had two hits.
