LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team Split with (RV)Tabor College at home on Saturday on the first day of their three-game weekend series. They fell 5-4 in game one, and Josh Robinson picked up his first win as a Spire on the mound with a 5-4 score in game two.
The Spires are now 2-15 overall and 1-5 in the KCAC.
GAME 1
Two hits in the first inning allowed the Bluejays to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Spires started to warm up the bats in the fourth inning and tied it up 1-1 after a sacrifice fly by Peyton Garvin brought in Antonio Valentin. After a quick three up and three down, Saint Mary took the lead with a sacrifice fly from Valentin. Next up, Damian Lomeli hits a nice base hit up the middle of the field to bring in another run to make it a 3-1 ballgame. A three-run homerun in the eighth gave Tabor a 5-4 lead, and they would hold on defensively the rest of the way to pick up the win.
GAME 2
It was a tie ballgame after the first inning with a 1-1 score. Tabor would score three runs in the third inning and led majority of the game until a big two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning from the Spires. Alex Guevara-Moya got on base after he was hit by a pitch, and Jarett Goss followed with a single through the 5-6 hole. Two grounders from Gilbert Rondon and Valentin made it a one run ballgame. Daniel Gonzales then stepped into the batter's box and crushed the ball to deep left field for a standup double to give Saint Mary the 5-4 lead. The Bluejays tested the Spire defense in the final inning with two runners in scoring position, but Johnny Vasquez ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
INSIDE THE STATS
-Adrian Cardenas had seven strikeouts.
-Gonzales and Valentin both led the team with two RBI's.
-As a team, Saint Mary had 14 hits on the day.
