LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team swept Peru State in a doubleheader on Wednesday by scores of 3-2 and 7-3, behind a strong offensive effort, which fought back from an early deficit in the second contest.
The Spires are now 5-10 overall on the season.
GAME 1
The first game between the two teams found little offense early on. Saint Mary would get on the board first in the third inning, after Riley Piattoni grounded out to second base, but Allyson Stolte would score from third base on the play. Peru State would strike back in the fourth inning after a leadoff triple to right field, which later resulted in an RBI single for the Bobcats.
Both teams would go into the seventh inning tied at one apiece, but Peru State was able to break the tie in the top half. With a runner on second, the Bobcats brought the runner around on an error from the Spires to take the slim lead. The Spires found themselves with a rally opportunity in the bottom of the seventh however. With the bases loaded Mara Davis grounded to the pitcher as the Bobcats decided to throw home, but a costly missed catch by the catcher allowed Stolte to score. Piattoni then followed that up with a walk-off single to score Isabelle McCarty to give the Spires the win.
Piattoni had two RBI in the game. Shelby Mohler threw seven innings, allowed just two runs, and struck out seven Bobcats.
GAME 2
In the second game, Peru State would grab a quick 2-0 lead after a two-run home run from Hailey Wessel in the first inning. Saint Mary would chip away and add a run in the bottom of the second after Hazel Faz knocked in Josefina Gutierrez with an RBI single.
Piattoni would later reach on an infield single, which also scored McCarty to tie the score at 2-2. The onslaught would continue as Victoria Gutierrez hit a double to left field – scoring Mara Davis and Piattoni to make it 4-2 USM. The Spires would increase their lead at 7-3 after the fourth inning, after posting four runs in the frame.
The Spires would roll to the 7-3 victory to complete the sweep over the Bobcats for the day.
(Victoria) Gutierrez and Madisyn Thompson each had two RBI in the game.
