Softball Falls In Late Innings To Bethel

NEWTON, Kan. - The University of Saint Mary softball team came up short in game one to Bethel College Tuesday, falling 6-5 in both games.

Saint Mary is now 5-14 overall and 0-3 in the KCAC.

The Spires and the Threshers were both scoreless in the first three of the first contest of todays game. As the later innings began each teams bats started heating up, the Spires scoring off of Hailey Reece's RBI single. Then the seventh inning was full of drama as both teams scored 4 runs but the Spires could not hold on to get the win.

In game two the Spires had a better start – keeping up with the Threshers hitting the score was tied up after three innings at 2 a piece. Then, in the bottom of the fifth Saint Mary went on the attack scoring two runs on a Riley Piattoni double down the left field line. Then Piattoni was driven in on a shallow single, giving the Spires a three run lead. The defense held strong in the top of the sixth still holding the lead. The Spires then gave up four runs in the top of the seventh and needed only 2 runs the seal the win in the bottom of the inning but fell up short, losing again by a score of 6-5.

Saint Mary will return Saturday for a double header against Sterling College at 1pm in Sterling, Kansas.
