Salina, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team split a doubleheader with Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday, winning 5-1 in the first game but falling short in the second game 6-5.
The Spires are now 7-16 overall and 2-5 in the KCAC on the season.
GAME 1
Saint Mary started off first with a run in the top of the first thanks to a rbi ground out by Riley Piattoni to score Mara Davis, 1-0. The coyotes answered back right after to score a run and tie the game even, 1-1. Maria Howard pitched a gem and the Coyotes struggled all game to find hits in order to score. The Spires got insurance runs in the top of the 6th to extend their lead by three thanks to sacrifice fly by Howard to score Victoria Gutierrez, 4-1. The Spires will score another run in the top of the seventh and Howard held the Coyotes to just one hit to win the game, 5-1.
Davis collected two hits and Isabelle McCarty lead the Spires with two hits and an RBI.
GAME 2
The Spires would start off first and scored three runs in the top of the second thanks to a great offensive push by Saint Mary and collected five hits to lead , 3-0. The Coyotes answered back and score one run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to just two, 3-1. The Coyotes were able to continue their comeback in the next inning and scored four more runs to gain the lead, 5-3. The Spires weren't discouraged and were able to cut the deficit by one thanks to a RBI single by Piattoni to score McCarty, 5-4. The Spires looked for a come back and were able to tie the game in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Davis to score Howard, 5-5. The Coyotes looked to answer back and were able to score a run in the bottom of the seventh and defeated the Spires by one, 6-5.
Davis collected three hits for the Spires and Hazel Faz lead the Spires with two RBI's.
The Spires will be back in action at home for a doubleheader against York College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
