Spires Earn Comeback Win Over SC, Split Doubleheader

WINFIELD, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team swept fell in the first game 15-7 to Southwestern College Tuesday afternoon, but earned a big comeback win in the second contest taking the game 6-5.

The Spires are now 10-17 overall and 5-5 in the KCAC on the season.

GAME 1
The game only lasted five innings as the Spires got on the board first when Mara Davis knocked in Hailey Reece, to give the team a 1-0 lead. Southwestern would add two runs in the bottom of the first, but Saint Mary cashed in with a run in the third inning. With two outs, Isabelle McCarty hit a deep double to left-center field to tie the game at 2-2.

The Moundbuilders were able to break away in the next two innings and scored 10 runs to take a 12-2 lead. Saint Mary added five runs in the seventh inning, but Southwestern scored three in the bottom half to take the win in a shortened contest, 15-7.

Carmen Cordova and Reghan Ross each had two hits, while Reece had two RBI in the game.

GAME 2
In the second game, both teams were scoreless through the first two innings. The Moundbuilders then added four runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, before going up 5-0 after five innings.

Saint Mary would get on the board in the sixth inning when Hazel Faz hit a single to score Reece, as the Spires trailed 5-1. Saint Mary started their attempt at a comeback in the seventh inning when Allyson Dias tripled to left field – scoring Riley Piattoni before McCarty singled her in cutting the Moundbuilders lead at 5-3. The scoring would continue as McCarty stole second base, followed by a double from Reece to bring McCarty around making it 5-4 SC.

Davis then stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI triple to keep the line moving, as the Spires tied the game at 5-5. The comeback followed with an RBI single from Ross to score Davis as the Spires took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Saint Mary was able to escape the jam with a runner on third base and held on for the comeback victory.

Ross led the team with three hits, while Reece scored two runs in the game.

Saint Mary is scheduled to return home to take on Benedictine College tomorrow at 2 p.m.
