LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary softball team fell in a doubleheader to Benedictine College Wednesday afternoon, by scores of 14-4 and 6-4.
The Spires are now 10-19 on the season.
GAME 1
Benedictine owned the first game with a 14-4 outing on the scoreboard. The Ravens posted a three mark in the first frame before Saint Mary tied it at 3-3 in the second inning. With two outs, Riley Piattoni scored on a single from Maria Howard followed by a triple from Delaney Hess. With the Spires trailing 3-2, Hazel Faz singled to bring in Hess to tie the game.
The Ravens then added eight runs over the next two innings to take an 11-3 lead before riding it to the 14-4 win.
Faz had two hits in the game, while Hess scored two runs.
GAME 2
In the second game, Reece would put the Spires on the board after scoring on an error. The Spires added their second run of the game in the bottom of the second when Reece hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field – scoring Piattoni to tie the game at 2-2. Benedictine then went up 6-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Saint Mary had an opportunity to add some runs in the bottom of the sixth, but left the bases loaded. Mara Davis hit a fly ball to left field, which was caught down the left field line to end the inning.
The Spires had one last shot in the bottom of the seventh and started it with Reghan Ross and Faz both reaching base. Dias then drove in Ross to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Spires would add one more run, but the Ravens came out on top in the end 6-4.
Piattoni, Ross and Faz each led the team with three hits.

Saint Mary is scheduled to take on Tabor College Saturday at home at 1 p.m.
