Men's Basketball Drops Home Opener to Baker 83-70

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team hosted the Baker Wildcats Thursday night, resulting in an 83-70 loss. The Spires are now 1-2 Overall.

Joey Schultz got things started for the Spires early as he helped give Saint Mary the lead with multiple scores. Baker responded with quick scores to get them right back in the game. Joe Burgos helped the Spires fight back with a three of his own as Deshaud St. Martin, and Braylen Duncan contributed as well with quick scores. Saint Mary started to sink their shots with just under eight minutes to go in the half as they pulled away with a 33-27 lead. Luke Mackey and Cam Southern added key points in the streak for the Spires as they went into halftime up 38-28.

Mackey and Schultz helped the Spires score early, but the Wildcats continued to keep the game close. Capitalizing on turnovers and making their free throws, Baker found themselves down 52-48. Brayden Duncan and Mason Belcher added scores, but the Wildcats continued to apply offensive pressure, eventually taking the lead 57-56. The game's momentum soon shifted to Baker's side as they extended their lead. A late push by St. Martin and Duncan was not enough, as the Wildcats won 83-70. St. Martin led Saint Mary on offense with 16 points going six for ten with two threes, along with eight rebounds and four assists.

The Spires are set to play Park University at 1 p.m. next Friday in Lawrence, Kansas.
