Leavenworth, KS- The University of Saint Mary lost 6-2 in their midweek matchup against Avila University on Tuesday.
Timely hitting proved costly for the Spires, who took on the Avila University Eagles on Tuesday. In the top half of the second inning, Avila struck first, plating three runs on two hits and a miss played ball by the Spire defense. 3-0 would be the score until the Spires scratched one run across in the bottom half of the fifth courtesy of a one-out double by shortstop Alex Guevara and an RBI single from right fielder Peyton Garvin. The Spire offense remained dormant until junior third baseman Brendan Roop drove a pitch over the left-field fence for a home run making the score 5-2 in favor of Avila. The Eagles then added one more run in their half of the ninth inning to make it 6-2 & that would be the final score of this ball game. Spire third baseman Brendan Roop had himself quite the day at the plate, going three for four with an RBI. Freshman Jack Knutson had a two-hit day as well as Peyton Garvin, who went two for five.
