Leavenworth, Ks- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted the McPherson Bulldogs on Saturday for a doubleheader. The Spires split the doubleheader, winning game one 2-1 but dropping the second 3-1.
Game 1
In game one, the Spires and Bulldogs were carried by the pitchers. Starter Maria Howard went five and one-third innings and recorded five strikeouts for Saint Mary. The Spires would get their runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to go up 2-0.
Allyson Dias would lead off the fifth with a triple and was drove in after Hazel Faz hit a single up the middle. Then, Madisyn Thompson hit a double that drove in Faz, and the Spires took a 2-0 lead. Shelby Mohler would come into pitch and got the save after throwing the final two innings. The Bulldogs would get one run in the sixth but did not score in the seventh, and the Spires won 2-1. Thompson led Saint Mary on offense after going one for one with an RBI and a walk.
Game 2
The Spires would find themselves down early in game two after a second-inning single put them down 1-0. Starter Allie Cox went three and one-thirds inning while Mohler would come in again to see the rest of the game through. The Bulldogs would get two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, putting the Spires down 3-0.
Then in the sixth, Victoria Gutierrez would get on after an error by the shortstop. Gutierrez scored after Thompson hit an RBI double that put the Spires within two runs, making the score 3-1. Saint Mary would not be able to get any more runs in the bottom of the seventh and lost 3-1. Thompson again led the Spires on offense in game two by going one for two with an RBI and a walk.

The Spires will take on Bethany College at noon on Saturday for the final regular-season home doubleheader.
