Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team opened their weekend series against Sterling College on Friday and held on to win by a score of 10-8.
The Spires would take an early lead in the bottom half of the first after Kruz Wahwahsuck and Trevor Neely both hit RBI singles, making it 2-0. In the second inning, the Warriors would tie it up, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and ground out. Saint Mary would answer and took a commanding 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second.
Keaton Herron started off the inning with an RBI single, then Brendan Roop would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one, and finally Peyton Garvin hit a double that drove in Herron. The Spires would extend their lead even further in the bottom of the third after Preston Gibson and Sebastian Lewis each hit a sacrifice fly to drive in two more runs, giving the Spires a 7-2 lead. Starter Yanthony Navarro went seven innings for Saint Mary, giving up five runs and striking out three.
Sterling would chip away at the lead, scoring two more in the top half of the fourth and cutting the Spires lead to three. Saint Mary would get another two runs in the fifth after Gibson hit a two-run home run to make the score 9-4. However, the Warriors would get one run back in the sixth and three in the top of the eighth to make it 9-8.
Garvin would single in the bottom of the eighth to give the Spires a much-needed insurance run, putting them up 10-8. Drake Pingel would record the save and help the Spires get the 10-8 victory. Garvin led Saint Mary on offense by going three for four with two RBIs and a run.
