Spires Drop to No. 8 Southwestern College 32-14

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team hosted Southwestern College Saturday night and lost by a score of 32-14. The Spires are now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the KCAC.

The first quarter was slow for both teams, the Spires and Builders were held scoreless, and as the second quarter began, it was still 0-0. Southwestern struck first in quarter two after blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown, taking a 7-0 lead. Saint Mary was unable to score on the ensuing drive, but the Builders got that ball back and settled for a field goal to make 10-0. The Spires responded as Jartavious Martin got Saint Mary on the board after a 69-yard touchdown rush, making it 10-7. The Saint Mary defense held strong late in the second quarter and force the Builder to give the ball back to the Spires with under five minutes to go. Quarterback Erick Covington gave Saint Mary a 14-10 lead after a 71-yard touchdown, and it seemed the Spires would go into halftime with a four-point lead. Southwestern was able to score with thirty seconds in the half on a one-yard rush after a deep pass put them there the play prior, making it 17-14.

The Spires gave up the ball twice early in the second half, but the defense was able to hold the Builder offense to just two field goals, making it 23-14, with under ten minutes to go in the quarter. Saint Mary was held scoreless in the second half, after their two quick field goals, Southwestern scored one more touchdown and a safety, making the final score 32-14. Martin led the Spires with 114 rushing yards and a touchdown on the day. Defensively, Hennessey Thomas had three tackles for loss, a sack, a pass break-up, and 16 total tackles.
