Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team took on the Ottawa Braves, resulting in an 81-58 win. The Spires are now 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the KCAC.
Saint Mary got off to a fast start with their offensive production as Tanea Sims, and Jerrica Johnson put the Spires up early. Midway through the quarter, the Braves went on a scoring run to bring them within three points, making the score 15-12. Rebecca Gilpin hot a three-pointer right before the end of the first quarter and gave the Spires momentum. Gilpin again hit a three to start the second quarter that sparked a 10-2 run to extend the Spire lead to 33-18. As the quarter ended, Saint Mary continued to press offensively. Alanis Delgado, Sims, and Johnson hit big threes to take a commanding 49-26 lead heading into the half.
Saint Mary started the second half much like they started the first with strong offensive production as Daija Planas and Delgado hit their opening shots. Points by Alex Specht and Shelby Salter closed the quarter out to give USM the 68-42 lead. Despite an impressive scoring streak by the Braves to start the fourth quarter, the Spires proved to be too much for Ottawa, as they ran away with an 81-58 win.
Delgado and Johnson combined for 38 points as Pendley tallied eight rebounds. The Spires also shot 50% from the field while holding Ottawa to 30% shooting.
