Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team hosted Bethel College on Saturday, resulting in a 2-1 loss. The Spires are now 4-7-5 overall and 3-5-3 in the KCAC.
After sustained pressure from the Threshers to start the game, Bethel opened the scoring with a goal in the tenth minute of play, taking a 1-0 lead. Jashil Vithal and Marco Vernazza each took shots in an attempt to tie things up at one, but neither was able to break through. The game entered halftime with the Spires down 1-0.
In the fifty-third minute, Bethel scored their second goal of the day, making it 2-0 in favor of the Threshers. Guilherme Caldas had two back-to-back shots with 25 minutes to go, and both sailed high of the net. In another sequence with multiple shots by the Spires, Thomas Peralta scored on a rebound from Jade Baartmann's shots to cut the Thresher's lead in half. Saint Mary then threw everything they had on offense for an equalizing goal. However, Bethel held off the Spires and won by a score of 2-1.
