Saint Mary Holds on After Rodgers Early Goal

McPherson, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Soccer team played McPherson College on Saturday to conclude the regular season and resulted in a 1-0 win. The Spires finished the year with an overall record of 8-3-5 and a KCAC record of 8-1-4, setting the record for most single-season conference wins in program history.

Saint Mary struck first in the early goings of the first half with an unassisted goal from Abbie Rodgers. The Spires continued to press offensively with shots from Nanako Hallier and Diana Aguilar, but none found the back of the net.

After the break, Marisol Vargas had two quick and lead-preserving saves. Offensively, Saint Mary kept taking good shots and forcing the McPherson goal answer by making hard saves. However, the Spires could not find an insurance goal in the second half, but stout defense helped get Saint Mary past the Bulldogs with a 1-0 win. Vargas recorded her seventh shutout of the season and her third in three games.
