Park City, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against Park University on Saturday evening, resulting in a 61-58 win. The Spires are now 2-0 on the season.
The Spires got off to a rocky start to begin the game but soon found their rhythm as Tanea Sims went 4-4 from the free throw line to get the Spires on the board, making the score 4-6. A made three by Alanis Delgado helped put the Spires up by one. After a made layup and three by Keely Barnard, Saint Mary had taken the momentum back. Defensive stops by both teams kept the game close as a layup by Kaylani Hoskin extended the lead to 17-8.
Saint Mary maintained their lead to open the second quarter with a made shot by Sims and a three by Barnard. As the second quarter went on, both teams couldn't get on the board. A three by Rebecca Gilpin helped the Spires go into the half leading the game 33-17.
The Spires came out of the break and continued to increase their lead with shots from Alyche Brown and Sims, causing Park to call a timeout, with the score at 42-29. As the third quarter progressed, the Pirates went on an 11-2 run, bringing them within four points.
In the fourth, the Spires worked hard to hold onto their slim lead. A made three by Demi Aamold put the Spires back up by five, leading 51-46 with five minutes left in the game. Game-sealing free throw attempts by Sims and Delgado helped Saint Mary hang on to win the game 61-58. Sims ended the game with 18 points, while Delgado had six assists.
