Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team hosted Baker University for their home opener on Wednesday, resulting in a 77-71 loss. The Spires are now 2-2 overall on the year.
Saint Mary could not find a spark in the game's first few minutes, going down 12-3. The offensive output of the Wildcats could not be matched, opening the game with four threes compared to the Spires's lone three-pointer. Blake Chadwick, Demarious Houston, and Tre Alexander kickstarted the Spires's defense, coming up with multiple steals. Deshaud St. Martin and Houston both had five points for the Spires. The outcome of the first half was 45-22 in favor of the Wildcats.
The Spires found themselves down 23 with much ground to cover after the break. Impressive offense started to give Saint Mary some momentum as Joey Shultz made two threes in a row. Chadwick became a growing nuisance for Baker after forcing three turnovers in the half. Saint Mary shortened the Baker lead to four points with under ten minutes left in the half. However, the Spires ultimately could not keep up with the Wildcat's three-point shooting, losing 77-71.
