Kansas City, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team played Columbia College and Park University for a Sunday doubleheader at the Urban Youth Academy, winning game one 4-2 but dropping game two. The Spires are now 5-5 on the year.
Game One
Starter Yanthony Navarro had a strong first inning, striking out the first and last batter to come to the plate. An RBI single and a wild pitch allowed Columnbia to take a 2-0 lead after the top half of the second. The Spires were able to even things up after a base hit to right field from Bryce Turner drove in two runs making the score 2-2. Jack Knutson gave Saint Mary the lead in the fifth after an RBI single scored Steele Sadler. Two batters later, Brendan Roop reached first via an error by the shortstop, which allowed Caleb McClellan to cross the plate for the deciding run, giving the Spires a 4-2 lead. Navarro was able to hold the Cougars scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings. Jacob Castaneda came to get the final three outs for the save, and a Saint Mary win. Knutson led the Spires, going two for four with an RBI and run scored, and Navarro threw six innings, giving up two runs and striking out eight.
Game Two
A sacrifice fly got the Pirates on the board first in game two of the Spires doubleheader. Saint Mary surrendered four runs in the third inning after a sudden pitching change. Park scored four more runs in the fourth off multiple base on balls, making the score 9-0 in favor of the Pirates. The Spires got two runs back in the bottom half of the fourth after back-to-back RBI doubles from Brendan Roop and Bryce Turner to make it 9-2. Park had six more runs get across the plate in the fifth and sixth innings, while Saint Mary had only two runs scored over those two innings. Wyatt Lowry drove in the Spire's final run of the game with a double in the gap that scored in Ben Cordova, making the final score 16-5 in favor of the Pirates. Roop led the team going two for three with an RBI and a run scored in game two.
