Baseball Drops Wednesday Matchup to Baker

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary played the Baker Wildcats on Wednesday, resulting in a 22-10 loss. The Spires are now 8-14 overall on the season. 

Baker took the lead in the opening inning, scoring three runs off of four hits. The Spires got one run back in the bottom half of the first with a single to left field from Noah Parra, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Wildcats. Both teams traded off runs in the second and Preston Gibson took advantage of a passed ball, giving Saint Mary their second run of the day. The Wildcats put up eight runs in the third inning, extending their lead and making the score 12-2. 

Saint Mary was able to chip away at the Baker lead in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back RBI doubles from Caleb McClellan and Bryce TurnerBrendan Roop got the last run of the fourth with a single that drove in Turner and brought the Spires within seven runs of the Wildcats. In the fifth inning, Baker drove in five more runs to make it 17-5. Saint Mary got one run in the sixth and four in the seventh but could not keep up with the Baker scoring and eventually fell 22-10 in eight innings. Turner went three for five on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Saint Mary will host Friends University for a weekend series beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
