Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted Avila University for the rubber game of their mid-week series, resulting in a 7-5 win. The Spires are now 15-27 overall and 8-18 in the KCAC.
The game started slow, with both teams struggling to get their offenses going. It was not until the top of the third inning that Avila managed to score the first runs of the game, coming from a double and a sacrifice fly. Saint Mary responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a single by Jack Knutson and a sacrifice fly hit by Brendan Roop that tied the game up at two runs apiece.
The game remained tied mostly due to the strong outing by starter Noah Parra who threw seven and a third innings. In the top of the seventh, Avila took a 3-2 lead, but in the bottom half of the inning, the Spires responded and tied things back up at 3-3. Ropp capped off the inning with a grand slam to left center, making it a 7-3 ball game. Avila threatened the Saint Mary lead in the eighth inning after scoring two runs. Jacob Castaneda came in to pitch for the Spires and was able to shut the door on the Eagles for the 7-5 win.
