Spires Make it Six in a Row After Win Over William Woods

Fulton, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team traveled to take on the William Woods Owls for a mid-week matchup on Wednesday, resulting in a 22-19 win. The Spires have now won six straight games, improving to a record of 15-27 overall. 

 

After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first, Saint Mary responded by scoring seven runs in the top of the second. Brendan Roop got the inning started with a lead-off solo home run, his second straight game with one. Bryce Turner drove in a run after hitting a single to left field, and Jack Knutson drove in two more runs with a single to right field, helping give the Spires a 7-2 lead. The Owls countered with a six-run inning in the bottom half of the frame to take another two-run lead. 

 

However, William Woods' lead did not last for long after another big inning in the top of the fourth. Kruz Wahwahsuck had a two-RBI double to left field, and Keaton Herron had a double of his own that also drove in a run. Saint Mary scored three more runs before the fourth came to a close, making it a 13-9 ball game. The Spires scored nine more runs throughout the rest of the game, building a 20-11 lead at one point, William Woods did not give up and were able to score ten more runs but could not overcome the deficit. In the later innings of the game, the defense was able to hold on to give Saint Mary the 22-19 victory. Wahwahsuck went four for five on the day with four RBIs and three runs scored on the day. 

 

Up Next

The Spires will be on the road to play Bethany College in a three-game series with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday in Hillsboro, Kansas.
