Softball Splits With Coyotes

Salina, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday, winning 6-3 and then losing 4-2. The Spires are now 20-25 on the season and 3-17 in the KCAC.

Game One

With the bases loaded early in the first inning, Allie Cox was hit by a pitch that allowed Briana Solis to score and give the Spires the 1-0 lead. Later in the third inning, the Coyotes got on the board after a two-run home run gave them the lead. However, the Spires came up big in the fifth inning as they scored four runs off the bats of Cox, Sadie McWilliams, Megan Brinkman, and Natalie Bruce giving USM the 6-2 lead. One more run in the sixth inning was all the Spires would allow as they closed the game out for the 6-3 win. McWilliams went two for three from the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while Brinkman earned the win in the circle.

Game Two

Kansas Wesleyan struck first in game two after a sacrifice fly granted them the early 1-0 lead. Saint Mary responded in the top of the second with a home run by Cox to tie things up. The Spires built on this the following inning as Alexis McDaniel scored on an error. Two runs in the fifth inning for the Coyotes, followed by another insurance run in the sixth inning, was all Kansas Wesleyan needed to escape with the 4-2 win. The Spires had a chance to rally in the top of the seventh with two runners on, but could not get any runs in.
