The Mustangs pressured Saint Mary early, taking multiple shots on goal. Come Grieu made two saves to keep the game in a 0-0 deadlock. At the 20-minute mark, the Spires began to go on the attack with corner kicks and shots on goal from Anthony Rangel and Guilherme Caldas. Morningside struck first in the 29th minute on a set piece that trickled past the keeper into the back of the net.
Saint Mary tied things up with two minutes in the half when Romario Harding hit a through ball to Caldas, who got around the Mustangs goalie and poked the ball into the net.
The pace of play slowed throughout most of the second half, with limited scoring opportunities for both teams. Rangel nearly put the Spires up by one in the 66th minute with a breakaway shot that sailed high of the net. With ten minutes to go in the game, the Mustangs had back-to-back shots on goal in the box. Alex Scharff made two acrobatic saves to keep the game tied at one.
