Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Spires Comeback Falls Short in 73-63 Loss

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team hosted the McPherson Bulldogs on Wednesday, resulting in a 73-63 loss. The Spires are now 5-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

After surrendering seven unanswered points to open the game, Blake Chadwick and Demarius Houston got the Spires on the board to make it a 7-5 game. However, the Bulldogs responded with ten more unanswered points until Tre Alexander stopped the bleeding with a layup to cut the deficit to ten. Another layup from Alexander at the midway mark of the half again kept Saint Mary within ten points of McPherson.

The Bulldogs put together another extended scoring run that ended with three minutes to go in the half. Deshaud St. Martin hit a three to end the run, and Joey Schultz followed with a layup to make the score 41-24 in favor of McPherson heading into the break.

Schultz opened the second half with a three-point play after making a layup and drawing a foul. The Saint Mary offense began to heat up after the and-one, going on their own 10-2 scoring run, cutting the Bulldog's lead to 12 points. McPherson responded after the half's midway point by building a 70-50 lead over the Spires.

Saint Mary did not go down without a fight and pulled within ten points after a couple of shots from St. Martin fell, while Kaden Bonner hit two threes. Unfortunately, time ran out on the Spires as they could not complete the comeback.

St. Martin led the Spires in scoring with 21 points and in rebounds with 11. He and Houston also combined for six threes on the night.
