Lindsborg, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team took on the Bethany Swedes on Saturday, resulting in an 85-61 win. The Spires are now 6-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Saint Mary jumped out to a comfortable lead, going on a 10-2 scoring run to open the game. After the Swedes responded and shortened the Spire's lead, Demarius Houston hit a three to keep the lead at nine points. Kaden Bonner and Jordan Brown hit back-to-back threes to give USM a 23-10 lead midway through the half. Saint Mary outscored the Swedes 14-3 in the final six minutes of the half and entered the break up 46-23.
The Spires continued to put offensive pressure on the Swedes in the second half, going on another extended scoring run to take a 33-point lead. Bethany responded with an 11-0 run of their own, cutting into the USM lead.
Mason Belcher ended the Swede's run with a three, and Schultz added a layup to make it a 61-37 ball game. The Saint Mary offense lulled, and Bethany was able to capitalize, shrinking the Spire's lead to 14 with seven minutes left. Blake Chadwick put together five points with three minutes left, restoring the 20-point lead for Saint Mary. Johnson hit two free throws and a layup to put away the Swedes 85-61.
