Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted the Bellevue Bruins for a doubleheader on Sunday, winning game one 3-1 and 9-8 in the second game. The Spires now have an overall record of 6-6 this year.
Game One
Desarae Chavez started game one, throwing all seven innings, only allowing one run to score, and securing the win for the Spires. The Bruins had six hits on the game compared to the Spires, who only had three. Abigail Kudym started the bottom of the third inning with a walk and was driven in by Audrey Spellman's squeeze bunt to give Saint Mary a 1-0 lead. The Saint Mary defense held Bellevue for most of the game until the sixth inning when they tied the game at one. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Sadie McWilliams and Kudym brought two more runs across the plate for the Spires, making it a 3-1 ball game.
Game Two
Alexis McDaniel got the Spires started in the first inning, singling to center field. McDaniel Stole second to put herself into scoring position and advanced to third on a pass ball. A groundout RBI from Jessica Strandlund gave Saint Mary the early lead. The Spires had built a comfortable lead, scoring seven runs in the first four innings. Bellevue made it a one-run game with a six-run top of the fifth. Spellman and McDaniel gave the Spires two insurance runs in the bottom half of that inning. The Bruins nearly tied the game at nine in the sixth, scoring two runs and leaving two runners stranded on the bases. Megan Brinkman came in to pitch for the last inning and finished the game with a strikeout, giving the Spires a close 9-8 win.

The Spires will travel to play Benedictine College at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in Atchison, Kansas.
