Spires Sweep Warriors in Weekend Series

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Sterling College for a doubleheader on Saturday, resulting in a 9-1 win and a 5-0 win. The Spires are now 14-12 overall and 3-1 in conference play. 

 

Game One 

Desarae Chavez got the start and won over the Warriors in game one, throwing all six innings and giving up one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Sterling scored their lone run in the top of the first, Saint Mary had an answer in the bottom of the second as Alexis Hughes scored on an error by the Warriors catcher. The Spires took the lead in the fourth inning after Allyson Dias scored on a wild pitch to give USM a 2-1 lead, and Alexis McDaniel added another run with an RBI single to left field. Sadie McWilliams had a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 4-1 ball game. The Spires had a big bottom of the sixth inning, driving in five runs and giving Saint Mary a 9-1 win. 

 

Game Two

The bats remained hot for Saint Mary in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first. Huges drove in her second run of the day on a single to center field, and McDaniel scored on a throwing error by the Warriors. Allie Cox got the start in the circle, throwing a complete game shutout, giving up seven hits and striking out four batters. McDaniel led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to make it a 3-0 ball game. In the fifth inning, Jessica Strandlund hit an RBI triple to right-center, extended the Spires lead to four runs, and Dias drove in Strandlund with a sacrifice to give USM a 5-0 lead. Cox was able to retire Sterling in the sixth and seventh innings to give the Spires the two-game sweep.
