Leavenworth, Kan.- Spire volleyball faced a tough mid-week KCAC match against the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on their home court in Leavenworth, Kan. In an evening that was full of competition, the Spires displayed resilience but ultimately fell with a final score of Oklahoma Wesleyan 3, University of Saint Mary 1.
The night commenced with intensity, as both teams vied for early dominance. The first set saw the Eagles edging out the Spires 25-20, setting a challenging pace. However, USM responded with resilience in the second set, securing a 25-22 victory which demonstrated their capability to rebound under pressure. The third and fourth sets were challenging for the Spires, as the Eagles controlled the rest of the match, finishing 25-10 and 25-13 respectively.
Key players for the Spires included stand out senior,
Ainsley Gardner, who led the match with 17 kills and also contributed in blocking.
Chloe Byrd supported strongly with 15 kills. Defensively,
Gabby Kurle showcased exceptional skills with 25 digs. Assisting in the match, sophomore
Morgan Herrera proved to be crucial with 24 assists and also contributed on multiple fronts including scoring 2 aces.
The Spires are looking to regroup and focus on their next match on Saturday, October 18
th at 7:00 p.m. where USM will host the York University Panthers. The team currently holds a record of 17-7 with a 4-2 conference tally.
