USM Faces Tough Defeat at Home

Leavenworth, Kan.—Spires fell to the Valor in a midweek KCAC showdown in Leavenworth, where USM faced a challenging opponent in the Evangel (MO) Valor. The evening was marked by dynamic plays and high scoring, ended with the Spires falling 77-104.

The first quarter began with Evangel quickly asserting dominance, securing a quick and early 16-point lead. Despite a spirited effort from Keely Barnard, who landed an early 3-pointer, and additional points from senior Saige Grampsas, the quarter ended with the Spires trailing 14-30.

In the second quarter, USM aimed to close the gap, energized by an early 3-pointer from Grampsas. However, we struggled under Evangel's solid defense and aggressive full court press that led to fast-break points, and key plays from Carson Dillard, including back-to-back 3-pointers, and expanded Evangel's lead to 27 points by halftime. The scoreboard at the break showed a daunting 53-26 in favor of the Valor.

Despite the uphill battle, the Spires did not falter in their resolve during the third quarter. Evangel, however, continued to dominate both offensively and defensively, with Heaven Shockley adding significant pressure on both ends of the floor, ending the night with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Still, we were headed to the fourth and final quarter with Evangel still leading 79-51.

The final period saw a relentless attempt from Addison Tower and Grampsas who scored totaled seven 3-pointers on the night for the Spires. Nevertheless, Evangel's continuous pressure and a final three from deep from Ashton Bell sealed their commanding victory at 104-77.

Despite this, top performances came from Saige Grampsas, with 12 points and 7 assists, and Mary Olson who led with 7 rebounds. Looking ahead, the Spires hit the road eager for a win as they face the McPherson College Bulldogs on Saturday, December 6th at 5:00 p.m in Holman Fieldhouse in McPherson, Kansas. Your Spire women's basketball currently holds a record of 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the KCAC.
