Ottawa, Kan—
Women's:
The Spire women's tennis team used four singles victories and a pair of doubles wins to secure a 5-2 road dual victory over Ottawa University on Thursday at Forest Park in Ottawa, Kansas.
USM set the tone in doubles, taking two of the three courts to grab an early edge they would not relinquish. The top pairing of
Mia Rojas and
Shannon Finn delivered a key result at No. 1 doubles, rolling to a 6–2 win. Ottawa answered at the No. 2 spot, where the Braves' duo of Persson and Newcomb edged out a tight match in a 7–6 decision, claiming the tiebreak 7–3, over
Rowen Wiemers and
Monserrat Guerrero but USM secured the doubles point tally overall with its second victory coming from
Arsys Rojas and
Courtney Standley.
In singles play, the Spire women closed out the dual by winning four of the six courts. One of the most dominant performances of the day came from
Monserrat Guerrero at No. 3 singles. Guerrero did not drop a game in a 6–0, 6–0 sweep of Newcomb, providing a decisive point in the middle of the lineup and giving the Spires critical momentum as the remaining matches unfolded.
Saint Mary also received a singles victory from Finn, who backed up her doubles success with another point in the lower half of the lineup. While the score was not available in the final report, Finn's win was recorded as one of the Spires' four singles triumphs. Combined with Guerrero's shutout and additional victories from Finn and Rojas, USM's depth proved to be the difference in the team result.
The Spires' balance across both doubles and singles allowed them to control the overall tone of the afternoon. Saint Mary finished the dual with the upper hand throughout the order, reflecting consistent production from the Spires squad.
Men's:
The USM men's tennis match told a similar victorious tale and turned in a convincing all-around performance at Forest Park on Thursday, earning a 5-2 dual victory over Ottawa behind four singles wins and a pair of emphatic doubles shutouts.
The Spires controlled the middle and lower half of the singles lineup to seize command of the conference match up. The Spires posted two lopsided doubles wins with Evan Martiz and
Nudem Koyuncu defeating the Braves duo 6-0 and again with Mateo Dargel and
Carlos Grimaldi handing OU another 6-0 loss in the No. 3 doubles slot.
Carlos Grimaldi,
Nudem Koyuncu,
Korbin Priestley and
Mateo Dargel Argote each recorded straight-sets victories to secure four of the six singles points.
Saint Mary's strongest statement came from the back end of the order, where Priestley and Dargel lost just two games combined. Priestley dominated Parra 6-1, 6-0, while Dargel overwhelmed Mazieres 6-0, 6-1 to close out singles play. Koyuncu added a steady 6-3, 6-2 win over Corriger, and Grimaldi notched a key straight-sets decision over Daniel Sanchez, 6-4, 6-2, to give the Spires control of the dual.
Ottawa's top lineup spots kept the hosts within striking distance. At No. 1 singles, Perez Wienese rallied from a slow start against
Nils Dueppe, coming back from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in three sets. The Braves also picked up a straight-sets win from Ceravolo, who defeated Evan Martiz 6-4, 6-4, but Saint Mary's depth down the order ultimately tilted singles play in the Spires' favor.
With these combined victories, USM added a pair of quality road wins to their spring schedule and demonstrated the impact of strong doubles play combined with reliable performances in the middle and lower singles courts.
The Spires will look to build on this and they get their opportunity quickly, in just one day from now USM will take on the Friends Falcons at David Brewer Park in Leavenworth, Kansas with matches set for noon. Don't miss a second of the action by following along with all
