Bluejays Pull Away Late to Defeat USM in Hillsboro

Hillsboro, Kan.— The Spires stayed within one goal for more than 70 minutes before Tabor scored twice in the closing stages to secure a 3-0 conference victory Saturday. Jimenez delivered the decisive insurance goal in the 82nd minute, converting after a corner kick to end the Spires' push for an equalizer.

Rogers opened the scoring at 10:04, finishing a pass from Deckinger to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead. USM responded by generating five shots on goal before halftime. Diana Aguilar forced a save from Mulrooney in the 15th minute, and Mulrooney also stopped consecutive attempts by Allena Collins and Yaneila Romanlopez during a productive Spires sequence in the 23rd.

Saint Mary continued to apply pressure late in the first half. Kenna Dale placed an attempt on target at 35:58, but Tabor defender Nye kept it out. Alaina Thomas followed 35 seconds later with another on-target shot that Jimenez cleared for a defensive save. Despite the activity around the net, the Spires entered halftime trailing 1-0.

Bre'Ella DeMaranville helped keep her squad close by making seven saves over 90 minutes. Aguilar recorded the Spires' only shot on goal of the second half at 68:39, forcing Mulrooney into another stop. Alissa Groff then made a defensive save on Deckinger's attempt in the 77th minute, preserving the one-goal margin as Tabor pressed for separation.

The Bluejays broke through again at 81:37 when Jimenez scored from Weins' assist following a corner kick. Collins sent the Spires ensuing attempt high, and Mendoza completed the scoring at 88:57 off an assist from Hernandez. The Spires finished with seven shots, including six on target, while TC held a 16-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

USM women's soccer will come back home for their third KCAC match up as they cruise through conference play against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. The women will kick off on Wednesday, September 23rd at 5:00 p.m. on what is sure to be a beautiful evening double-header at Berkel Memorial Stadium in Leavenworth.
